"Can you actually give someone a painting?" It's a question I sometimes get asked at exhibitions, almost always with a hint of hesitation, as if art were a gift reserved for milestone occasions or people who already know what they're looking at. Yet an original abstract painting is one of the most personal gifts there is: unlike a mass-produced object, a one-of-a-kind canvas carries the trace of a gesture, a chosen colour, a specific moment. As an artist who has sold her canvases directly since 2021, here's how to get this choice right — whether it's for someone close to you, a colleague, or yourself.

Why an original work makes a different kind of gift

An original abstract painting exists in a single copy, unlike a print or a mass-produced reproduction. When it's built up with acrylic and a palette knife, as several of my canvases are, every ridge and every layer of paint holds the trace of the gesture that made it: no other piece, even in a similar style, ever looks quite the same. Giving an original work means giving something that can never be duplicated or picked up off a shelf — a rare quality in an age of standardised gifts.

Choosing for someone else means setting your own taste aside to look at theirs. Without repeating the exercise of choosing for your own home, a few pointers help avoid missteps: someone drawn to calm, light-filled interiors will likely respond better to a monochrome piece like Blanc Immaculé, while a bolder personality will enjoy a saturated palette closer to the Latin American geometric abstraction I trained in between Buenos Aires and São Paulo. When in doubt, a mid-size format (around 70×50 cm) tends to be the most versatile — present enough to register, flexible enough to fit into most interiors.

Five things to check before giving an original work as a gift

• —Confirm the canvas comes with a certificate of authenticity stating title, year, dimensions and technique
• —Plan for delivery or hand-off in advance, especially for larger formats
